Selected Readings

Curriculum Transformation and Disability: Implementing Universal Design in Higher Education. An online book edited by Jeanne Higbee.

Enhancing the Inclusiveness of First-Year Courses Through Universal Instructional Design. Higbee, Chung, and Hsu. (Pages 23 through 35 of this pdf file available online). This article includes practical examples of how three professors have included UID in a physical science, a psychology and a symbolic logic course. The section on defining essential elements of a course might be particularly useful.

Tools
Universal Instructional Design Implementation Guide from The University of Guelph. In 2002, the U of G received a grant that allowed them to develop their own definitions of the elements of UID, and develop this manual as a tool to help faculty incorporate those elements into their curriculum. Although the Guelph elements are basically consistent with those of Johnson and Fox. Individual or groups of faculty would find the worksheets and guides a useful tool in course design.

Universal Instructional Design in Post Secondary Settings: an Implementation Guide. Used in Ontario schools, this guide features a very useful Frequently Asked Questions Section

Web Sites
Disability Fact Sheet Handbook by Gregoria Barazandeh. This handbook breaks down accommodation recommendations by specific disability. Consider how the specific suggestions might benefit all students.

The DO-IT Center from the University of Washington. Extensive collection of links, including resources on incorporating UID into distance learning

Cast.org. You'll especially want to make use of the tools on the Teach Every Student section.

Universal Design in Post Secondary Education a collection of implementation suggestions from the University of Arkansas, Little Rock.

The Ivy Access Initiative The website of this joint project by Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Stanford and Harvard features an extensive collection of links and a self test to help you determine how much you know about UID.
