Dealing
with Behavioral Issues
You will encounter students with behaviors that
may cause you concern. The following information is provided
to help you identify the appropriate level of concern, what
you can do, and the resources that are available at the
University.

Disruptive Students
Students whose behavior makes teaching and learning difficult
for others in the class; Classroom civility issues
What
It Is
- Violations
of syllabus expectations
- Repeated
or habitual classroom interruptions or interference
- Being
late, reading the paper, sleeping, passing notes, making
noise, answering cell phone
- Personal
insults, harassment, or threats
- Physical
assault or violence
Disruptive
behaviors may be a symptom of a larger mental health and
well-being issue. (Refer to Distressed Student)

Distressed
Students
Students who are experiencing emotional and/or psychological
problems that are interfering with their ability to learn;
Mental health and well-being issues. (See Referral List
below.)

- Cutting,
self-mutilation
- Impulsive
behaviors/lack of self control
- Suicide
threats, ideation or attempts
- Extensive
history of alcohol or drug abuse
- Pattern
or trend of disrespectful behavior

patterns of eating (anorexia, bulimia, etc.)
